Using the School Profile Search feature on the main homepage of International School Community, we found the following stats about the 1247 international schools currently listed on our website.  (Updated from our February 2012 statistics)

Schools more than 51 years old: 251 ( 28)
Schools from 16-50 years old: 513 ( 57)
Schools from 0-15 years old: 483 ( 65)

(The top three regions in the world with international schools older than 51 years old are: Western Europe and South American (tied for #1) and East Asia.)

American Overseas Schools Historical Society website

The overseas education of more than four million American children and youth since World War II is an unwritten chapter in the history of American education and represents the schooling of several generations under circumstances unique to human history.

Today the U. S. departments of Defense and State operate or assist more than 300 schools in over 100 foreign countries.  Additionally there are more than 600 private American owned or supported schools abroad.

The mission of AOSHS is to collect, record, and preserve the unique history of educating American children and youth abroad; and to enhance public knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the contributions made by American educators and their students in the advancement of democracy around the world.

The American Overseas Schools Archives (AOSA) was first established on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff in 1989. The AOSA is dedicated to preserving the history and memorabilia of the kindergarten through grade 12 education of an estimated 4 million American children who attended more than 900 American overseas schools over the past 150 years.

In 1995 the American Overseas Schools Historical Society (AOSHS) was incorporated as a non- profit IRS 501(c)(3) organization.  The AOSHS office and archives are located in Wichita, Kansas.

They even have a section called: Overseas Educator Information.  There is much information about the teachers that work at these schools.  There is a picture on this page showing a reunion of some overseas teachers in Japan.  How cool to be reunited with the colleagues that you worked with in another country a long time ago perhaps.  I know after being at my third schools now, I am already starting to lose touch with the teachers that I worked with at my first international school.

Random international school profile stats on International School Community – 10 February, 2012

Using the School Profile Search feature on the main homepage of International School Community, we found the following stats about the 1097 international schools currently listed on our website.  (Updated from our November 2011 statistics)

Age of School:
Schools more than 51 years old: 223 ( 26 )
Schools from 16-50 years old: 456 ( 44)
Schools from 0-15 years old: 418 ( 72)

(The influx of new schools continues to be increasing!  I read somewhere that most new international schools in the world will be for profit schools.  East Asia still continues to be the area that has the highest number of “new” schools, but instead of the Middle East area being the second highest (like during the last ‘stats’ blog entry), now the second highest is in SE Asia.)

UK curriculum: 331 ( 50)
USA curriculum: 379 ( 29)
IB curriculum: 412 ( 34)

(The UK curriculum schools are now slowly catching up to the USA and IB curricula, but the IB international schools still continue to dominate our website.)

(Non-profit schools are still in the lead for international schools represented on International School Community.  For-profit schools are still on the increase at a higher rate than non-profit schools though.  Soon they just might catch up and be on par with for-profit schools.)

(The clear winner still Western Europe, but East Asia is creeping up. It seems as if there are limited options really if you would like to work at an international school in South America as there just aren’t that many international schools there; the ones that are listed in South America on International School Community haven’t increased in the past few months like the other regions have.)

The Peace Quilt of international schools: children’s message for peace

A teacher who is inspired can inspire students and other teachers!

According to the blog: This project began as an idea back in September 2008,the idea being to unite schools all around the world, in some way, potentially as a celebration of the London Olympics, 2012.  The people involved asked themselves to think of an idea of uniting schools all over the World.  The idea suggested was for all schools to do a collage of Peace, where children created their picture of what Peace meant to them, and to have it displayed at the Olympics.  That idea was then turned into another idea of creating a Peace Quilt.  They got in touch with the not-for-profit organization PEACE ONE DAY and Jeremy Gilley.  POD have gladly made their Global Education Resource available free to all schools.  This was perfect for them, as Peace is something they were very committed to, knowing that it is a wish all children have.  This was the beginnings of this exciting project.

To touch your produce or to not touch your produce: that is the question!

I don’t know about you, but I prefer to touch my fruit before I buy it.

But touching fruit in other countries can be problematic.  There is never anybody watching you touch your produce in the United States, Australia, etc…but in certain counties touching the fruit is not even an option.

Is this a main factor when deciding on where you would next like to teach and live?  Most likely, not.   Remember though, that you probably go produce shopping at a grocery store or at the nearby fruit stand around two times a week.

Not being able to analyze my fruit and putting trust into the fruit stand owner to choose for you takes time.  If they make one wrong pick, put it into your bag and then to get home and see that it is rotten inside, they will for sure lose a customer.  But in all the places I have been in this world, there is always a store where you can choose the fruit and veggies yourself. I can understand why some stores don’t want you to touch their goods; you pushing too hard, messing up their display, etc…  but come on!  I just might be one of their loyalest customers for the next year or two!

Fruit buying is always a risk, but at least when you can choose your own fruit, you can take the blame.  But when somebody else is choosing your fruit and it is bad, that is a different story.  Now factor in not being able to say “which apples are the sweetest here?” in the host country language.  You learn that vocabulary pretty fast I suppose.
